Community Planning

197-a group to research existing local conditions.

The 197-a steering committee met on April 2 and 28, to discuss the steps for developing a community-based plan for the upland Hunters Point neighborhood. The planning group will address the following five issues: open space, senior housing, industrial sector jobs, parking and traffic.

Members of the steering committee represent the following groups: Hunters Point Community Coalition, Long Island City Community Gardens, Inc., Hunters Point Community Council, River View Community Coalition, LIC Business Development Corporation, Hunters Point Community Development Center, LIC Interblock Association, Queens Borough President's Office, Community Board 2, and Queens Department of City Planning. Five steering members have been assigned to research the existing conditions for the above mentioned issues. The results will be presented at a Town Hall meeting, at which time the 197-a process will be discussed and possible options will be reviewed.

While there are many pressing issues facing the community, Community Board 2 believes that the success of the plan depends on the group's ability to remain focused on specific items, and open to suggestions from all groups on those items. Many steering committee members believe that the plan will provide a strong foundation for future community planning efforts.
