safe neighborhood?

As a single girl moving to NYC I'm temptend by LIC's arty scene and reasonable rents, but is it safe to walk around at night? Are people going to break into my place? The areas I've visited were pretty industrial and sparsely inhabited. Any info, personal experiences, etc. would be helpful to me in making my decision. Thanks, k.
