Long Island City is one of the New York metropolitan region's most vibrant areas for the arts. Some historically reknowned artists including Joseph Cornell have made LIC their home. In the last years of Isamu Noguchi's life, he devoted his attention to transforming his LIC studio into the Noguchi Museum which includes a sculptural garden. Mark DiSuvero's monumental steel sculptures grace The Socrates Sculpture park, which he founded. This ever changing site on the Queens waterfront is the metropolitan region's largest outdoor sculptural park. The Urban Arts Institute or PS 1, housed in a spectacular neo-gothic structure, is an internationally known exhibition space for contemporary and experimental art. The community of Long Island City has a vast population of artists, sculptors, musicians, film makers, and representatives of all other creative disciplines.
